Teen Carjacks & Kills Mother On Her Way to Drop 3 Kids Off at Summer Program

The carjacking shooting dead of a mother has led to the arrest of a Missouri teenager. The mom was reportedly killed while taking her children to a summer day care program.

On Monday morning, Porsha Owens, 28, was getting ready to take her children, ages 3 to 8, to the program at 7:15 when a male suspect, 18, allegedly approached her, St. Louis County police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The suspect — who has not been identified yet — allegedly covered his face with his shirt and demanded Owens’ car keys, money and purse. Officers say that after fatally shooting Owens, he allegedly ran from the scene after her car would not start, according to the newspaper.

Officials from the St. Louis County Police Department were expected to issue warrants today against the 18-year-old currently in custody, Sgt. Shawn McGuire told the newspaper. He said more details would be published after charges are filed by the prosecutor.

PEOPLE attempted to contact the St. Louis County Police Department but were unsuccessful.

Owens’ cousin Keon King told local TV station WFMY that her oldest son stayed with his dying mother until paramedics arrived.

According to King, the oldest son told him that after she was shot, Owens looked up and said, “I’m sorry. I think I’m about to die.”

King added, “She didn’t have any chance. It apparently happened so quickly.”

Owens family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help her three children.
