The reason behind an 8-year-old New Jersey girl’s decision to take her own life over the weekend is still unclear, however, insiders close to the investigation say that she had seen an article on Facebook about another young girl killing herself in a similar way.
Prosecutors in Essex County, N.J. are working to determine whether Imani McCray was imitating what she had read about the death of Ashawnty Davis, 10, or if she hanged herself in a case of playacting gone wrong at her home this past weekend.
According to authorities, no evidence exists that points to Imani being a victim of bullying. However, she was discovered unresponsive under a week after officials say Ashawnty’s getting bullied prompted her to commit suicide.
The day of her death, Imani had been told to go to her room for a timeout. Family members who found her did everything they could to resuscitate her, and she did have a pulse when paramedics arrived, though it was weak. Ultimately, Imani was not able to recover, and was pronounced dead at a Newark hospital.
Imani would have turned 9 years old next week. Her family must now make arrangements for her funeral instead of planning for her birthday celebration.
